Aklilu Anawte

Aklilu Anawte was raised in Ketchene, a community south of Addis Ababa known for its rich weaving traditions and deep-rooted artistic culture. He earned his degree from the Fine Arts program at Addis Ababa University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in painting. At 32, Aklilu is a full-time studio artist based in Addis Ababa.

His work primarily focuses on portraiture, often depicting women and priests adorned in vibrant, intricately patterned traditional clothing. Through these garments, Aklilu expresses a strong sense of cultural identity and pride, using pattern, color, and texture to celebrate Ethiopia’s heritage and the beauty of its people.
