Makush Gallery is located on Bole Road, within the Mega Building, in the vibrant heart of Addis Ababa. Since its inception, Makush has remained at this same location, warmly welcoming both artists and art enthusiasts alike.
Founded in 2002 by Tesfaye Hiwet, who returned to Ethiopia in the early 2000s after years abroad in the U.S., Makush began by showcasing the works of 15 local artists. Today, it proudly represents over 120 artists and houses an eclectic collection of more than 1,000 original paintings in Addis Ababa.
Natnael Yohannes, the current owner and manager, has been an integral part of Makush from the beginning, working alongside his uncle Tesfaye. Over the past twenty years, Natnael has developed deep and respectful relationships with the artists, nurturing the gallery’s role as a vital platform for local talent.
Makush offers a carefully curated selection of original artworks, fostering close connections with Ethiopian artists and providing an accessible venue for patrons to discover and acquire unique pieces that capture the spirit of Ethiopia.
One of Makush’s core objectives is to promote a strong, modern perspective of Ethiopia through art. The gallery features a diverse range of works—from traditional to contemporary—that tell the stories of Ethiopia through the eyes of its artists. Makush collaborates with local businesses such as Ethiopian Airlines and Dashen Bank to bring this incredible art broader exposure, both locally and international.
Makush also maintains a special connection with the adoptive community, having facilitated over 15,000 relationships between Ethiopian families and adoptive families—primarily in the U.S., Ireland, and Canada. Many visiting families include Makush as a must-see stop when traveling to Ethiopia, often meeting with Natnael Yohannes during their visit.
Beyond the gallery, Makush is active in hosting social events. Although the restaurant has been temporarily closed since COVID-19, private parties and regular dinner events are still arranged. These gatherings bring together expatriates and local businesses to foster networking and community building.
Makush enjoys strong diplomatic ties and regularly holds exhibitions at embassies—including the European Union, EU member states, and the U.S.—as well as at international venues like the International Community School (ICS).
